Matiu jerks awake. He’s nodded off again, in the heat and the heavy air, the car windows rolled up nearly all the way because part of him is always looking over his shoulder, wary of who or what might be trying to get to him.

Paranoid, much? If the last couple of years have taught him anything, it’s that paranoia is the healthiest state of mind to maintain. That way, when the worst happens, you’re ready for it.

2.45pm. Close enough. He steps from the car into the muggy autumn afternoon, and heads for the crèche, glancing at the Cov-42 reader at the entrance. His phone will be shaking hands with the tech right now. Probably knew the moment he drove into the parking lot. He reminds himself it’s about keeping the little ones safe while they develop another new vaccine, not about the government monitoring his movements.

‘Hi Matiu,’ Ava greets him as he enters, her face puzzled. Honestly, he never thought a day would come when he was on a first-name basis with the staff at a daycare, but the world is a truly strange place.

‘Hey, just here to collect Mia. Charlotte and Erica are both busy, so I said I’d pick the little tike up. All good?’

Ava’s frown deepens. ‘Well, I know you’re on the list, but didn’t anyone tell you? Child Services collected her, about an hour ago. They had all the right paperwork, said they were taking Mia, for her safety.’

Matiu’s gut clenches. ‘Taking her where?’
